Driver experience days
This event is for all Associates, Full Members and Observers who would like to expand their knowledge of their vehicle's handling characteristics.
Perhaps you've recently changed your vehicle and would like to explore more of the handling, roadholding and braking of your shiny new machine than would be safe on the road. It doesn't involve a whole day and if there something that you don't want to do, you don't have to. On the other hand, if there is something (within reason) that you have wanted to try with your car we can try it!
Skid pan
Whilst our main thrust in the Chelmsford Group is helping people prepare for the Advanced Driving Test, we do organise some motoring-related events throughout the year. A long-standing popular one is the visits we arrange for our Members to the Essex Skid Pan at Kelvedon. Whilst this is a commercial operation, run by ex-police trainers, one of which is an IAM examiner, and people can go along to them on an individual basis, there are advantages of going along as a group. Firstly and most importantly is the cost. As a group we get a special deal on price and, in addition we subsidise the day in order to make attendance available to as many people as possible. Secondly, whilst there is no doubting the value being behind the wheel yourself, there is excellent entertainment value in watching everybody else make a mess of things!
4x4 experience (Part 1)
Members of the Group have the opportunity to visit professionally run 4x4 driving courses. The day covers both the theory and practical aspects of off-road driving allowing participants to discover a completely new driving style.
Steep inclines, tight corners, deep ruts and lots of mud make up the increasingly challenging aspects of the course. Each part of the course is demonstrated by the instructor before participants take their turn.
We also occasionally run a part 2 course for those that have already done the part 1 and want to get even more muddy. There is no date in the diary at present.
