Chelmsford & South Essex Advanced Motorists are a charity who provide Advanced Driver Training.

We are pleased to announce the merger(November 2025) of the Chelmsford & District Group of Advanced Motorists and the South Essex Group.
The group now covers all CM & SS Postcodes, plus RM 13 - 19.

Our experienced qualified volunteers will help you to prepare for the IAM RoadSmart test which will make you a safer driver, giving you and your passengers a smoother journey while you are able to progress towards your destination faster where appropriate.

Free advanced driving introduction

The best way to find out more about advanced driving is to experience it for yourself.

If you're interested in finding out what advanced driving techniques and skills could do for your confidence and ability, then this is for you. We believe that the very best way to understand and develop new skills is to see and feel them in your own car, with the guidance of an IAM RoadSmart qualified Observer.

Discount for Drivers under 26

Drivers under 26 years old will receive a discount of 50% off the Advanced Driver course fee (Currently £204) on passing the Advanced Driving Test.


Observers

The Advanced Driving Course is delivered by our Observers.
All of our Observers have passed the IAM National Observer qualification, certified by the Institute of the Motor Industry. This means that as well as being experienced Advanced Drivers themselves, they are trained to help others to improve their driving skills to reach an advanced level.

All of our Observers are volunteers who share a passion for safe driving. Once you've passed your Advanced Driving test, ask yourself whether you have what it takes and can spare the time to help others to prepare for the test, by training to be a National Observer. You'll be given free training and once qualified assigned to a new Associate with whom you'll conduct observed drives.

New figures show that one in eight of all road casualties are caused by people who drive too close to the vehicle in front, with more than 100 people killed or seriously injured each year. Become an Advanced Driver and help reduce these figures. See Stay Safe, Stay Back

Young Driver Scheme

If you're under 17 we know you can't wait to get behind the wheel, so we helped to create the hugely successful Young Driver Scheme. If you are 15 or 16 years old we can help you learn to drive with an approved driving instructor in a safe environment on private roads.
